Richard Packard qualified at the Middlesex Hospital in 1970. Before his appointment as Consultant Surgeon at Prince Charles Eye Unit, Windsor, in 1982 he worked at St Bartholomews Hospital, the Hospital for Sick Children, the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases, Moorfields Eye Hospital and Charing Cross Hospital.
He teaches keyhole cataract surgery all over the world and has contributed to the development of new designs and materials for small incision intraocular lenses. He has been involved in pioneering work using foldable lenses in keyhole surgery and has written extensively on cataract surgery. In 1999 Richard Packard was appointed to the board of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.
Special interests: small incision cataract surgery and foldable intraocular lens implantation, surgery and diseases of the ocular anterior segment, ocular adnexae and refractive surgery.
